Since I was a child, I thought it unjust that Jesus be born in a stable. The idea that he was
sheltered so meanly and wrapped only in strips of cloth instead of a warm layette troubled me. He deserved better; every baby deserved better. But the more I learn about the way that the Bible’s images and symbols work together to create a textured picture of God’s love, the more I began to suspect that Jesus’ situation was not a mistake, but an important clue to understanding more about Him.
