My son recently gave this intelligent, important speech at the high school where he teaches.

"It’s good to see you all. I’m really glad to be here, and I love this school. Chapel has become one of my favorite parts of the week, because I like when we (the school) can do things together. Even when I don’t follow the speaker, or I don’t understand the lyrics of a particular song, I still get the feeling that it’s not just myself doing this. We do chapel together.
It's my adventure now. There are a number of ways we talk about the world, cliches or platitudes, bromides or chestnuts, that we repeat over and over and over and rely upon, which turn out to be completely untrue. The biggest thing I think we misunderstand is time. We talk about time as if it were a series of moments that we inhabit one after the other. We talk about “time flying” or we remember specific moments from long ago, as if they were points on a geometric line, like intersections. We say that moments are brief. But really, when I think about how I experience time, my life is one long moment. I’ve been alive for almost 34 years now, and it’s always now..."

Something Wonderful about Friends

When you're given a friend you never expected to find or meet, the blessing is especially sweet. This is what happened to me when I met Sandie Larsen.  Here's how it happened, a friend at church, Karlene, is from Minnesota and when her quilt-loving mother, Madelyn, came to visit her, we hit it off, having grown children, grandchildren and sewing to bliss out about.
Madelyn read Solomon's Puzzle and loved it. She was kind enough to recommend it to friends, one of these friends is Sandie Larsen.  Sandie loved the book, too.
Let me just pause to say that when I write, the process is so involving and for me, somewhat difficult, that it is hard to imagine anyone actually reading what I'm writing, much less liking it.  After all it took me more than 12 years to write the draft of Solomon's Puzzle that is now being enjoyed!  So I am grateful for each person who reads it and so touched by each person who likes it enough to comment or to further recommend it.
Now Sandie is giving away two Solomon's Puzzle Sampler Quilt Patterns for Mother's Day.  You just have to visit her blog and leave a comment.  Her blog is wonderful with colorful examples of her beautiful work. She makes fun things, gorgeous things and useful things and recommends patterns, techniques in the most cheerful and easy-to-read style.  Check out crazy'boutquilts and see what I mean.

When Chocolate Doesn't Help

 thoughts on giving thanks

bakery case filled with french pastries raspberry tarts, etc.During Lent I gain weight. This is because every year I make a private vow to give up chocolate or sweets or cookies. There is a lot of chocolate around before Easter, in case you haven’t noticed. Every year, I prove my humanity and instead of eating none, or less, I eat more.  (Read more...)

Maybe, just maybe...

Hey! I think maybe, just maybe a certain little someone looks a bit like me! What do you think?
